Alexandre Gagatsis was born in Chambéry, France and was raised between Thessaloniki (Greece) and Nicosia (Cyprus), growing up in a multicultural environment. He benefited from early musical studies on the piano and subsequently studied drums with Brian Abrahams and mallet percussion with Daniela Ganeva. He holds master degrees from the Trinity College of Music, King’s College London and an Artist Diploma from the State University of New York at Purchase, where he studied with Hal Galper, Jon Faddis and John Abercrombie.
He has been generously supported by the Nicolas Economou Foundation, the State University of New York and was a Trinity College of Music scholar. He has carried out ‘Out Reach’ work in London, first with the Grand Union Orchestra (2007-2009) and later for ReachOut (2013-2014), a mentoring charity.
Currently, he is a PhD candidate at the University of Nottingham, holding the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Research Excellence and the Leventis foundation scholarship. His PhD focusses on the analysis of jazz improvisation as situated cognition, emphasising on the work of Milt Jackson.
Composer and Jazz guitarist Tasos Stylianou comes from the town of Morphou, Cyprus. He moved to New York at the age of 10 where he studied music at Mannes College of Music, followed by studies in Jazz and Contemporary Music at the New School for Social Research. After his BFA he studied composition privately with Henry Martin and later at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College where he received his MA in Composition. He then moved to Salt Lake City in order to study with Morris Rosenzweig. There he attended the University of Utah where he received his PhD in Composition. He has participated in many lectures, seminars/conferences and private sessions participating with composers such as Mario Davidovsky, Jonathan Harvey, Pierre Boulez, Paul Lanskey, Fred Lerdahl, Steven Mackie, Chen Yi and others.
Double bass player Irenaeos Koullouras’ most recent accomplishment was to organise the Old Port Jazz Festival in Limassol. He has performed extensively on the jazz scene. One of the most dedicated and active jazz musicians in Cyprus, Koullouras has a pure love for music.
Stelios Xydias is a drummer from Limassol, Cyprus. He got his B.A in Music (jazz drums) from Codarts Rotterdam conservatory in the Netherlands. During his studies he won the the Nicolas Economou Grand. He performed in many international stages and festivals around Europe with great musicians like Gilad Atzmon, Ofer Ganor and more. He also performed in various records and in October 2014 he published his personal EP “Silence” solo drums project. He is currently based in Limassol, where he is performing music and teaching in his own drum school “Precision & Freedom Drum Center”.
